De Meulemeester C, et al. - The authors performed this study to examine whether identity diffusion played a mediating role in the relationship between mentalizing difficulties and interpersonal problems in borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients. They gave preliminary evidence that impairments in mentalizing were associated with identity diffusion, which in turn was related to interpersonal problems in BPD. To further substantiate these outcomes, additional longitudinal research was required.
