Mental health and economic stressors associated with high-risk drinking and increased alcohol consumption early in the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States

Nesoff ED, Gutkind S, Sirota S, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the mental health and economic stressors early in the COVID-19 pandemic which may possibly correlate to heavy alcohol use and increased alcohol use.

  • An online survey was administered to US adults via social media in April 2020.

  • A total of 2,175 US adults participated; 10% of the participants reported high-risk drinking, and 36% reported increased alcohol consumption.

  • There appeared an association of job loss and depression with heavy drinking.

  • Relative to men, women more frequently reported heavy drinking.

  • Relative to low or moderate drinkers, heavy drinkers more frequently reported increased drinking.
