Mental health and economic stressors associated with high-risk drinking and increased alcohol consumption early in the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States

Nesoff ED, Gutkind S, Sirota S, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the mental health and economic stressors early in the COVID-19 pandemic which may possibly correlate to heavy alcohol use and increased alcohol use.
An online survey was administered to US adults via social media in April 2020.
A total of 2,175 US adults participated; 10% of the participants reported high-risk drinking, and 36% reported increased alcohol consumption.
There appeared an association of job loss and depression with heavy drinking.
Relative to men, women more frequently reported heavy drinking.
Relative to low or moderate drinkers, heavy drinkers more frequently reported increased drinking.
