Menarche, pregnancies, and breastfeeding do not modify long-term prognosis in multiple sclerosis
Neurology® Mar 29, 2019
Zuluaga MI, et al. - In this investigation, researchers studied how multiple sclerosis (MS) development and disability accrual was impacted by menarche, pregnancies, and breastfeeding using a multivariate approach based on a large prospective cohort of clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients. Data were gathered from 501 female participants. For this analysis, the relationship of age at menarche with the risk of clinically definite MS (CDMS), McDonald 2010 MS, and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) 3.0 and 6.0 were examined. Findings revealed that menarche age was not associated with CIS age nor was it related to the risk of CDMS or EDSS 3.0 or 6.0. Using a multivariable and time-dependent approach, menarche, pregnancy and breastfeeding did not meaningfully alter the risk of CDMS or accrual disability.
