Melatonin for delirium prevention in hospitalized patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Psychiatric Research Dec 16, 2020
Khaing K, et al. - Researchers investigated whether melatonin and melatonin receptor agonist, ramelteon could prevent delirium in adult hospitalized patients. For this purpose, this systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. MEDLINE, PREMEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled trials, PubMed, and Google Scholar were explored to identify randomized Controlled trials of melatonin/ramelteon published up to May 7, 2020. Delirium incidence was the primary outcome. Experts analyzed 14 studies including 1,712 participants. Findings revealed that a reduction in delirium incidence in hospitalized patients was brought about by treatment with melatonin/ramelteon. However, this impact appeared confined to surgical and ICU patients.
