Mediterranean diet increases endothelial function in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
The Journal of Nutrition Feb 15, 2020
Shannon OM, Mendes I, Köchl C, et al. - By analyzing eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases searched from inception until January 2019, researchers focused on the changes in endothelial function as a result of adopting Mediterranean dietary pattern (MedDiet) among individuals. For studies to be included in this analysis, they were required to be RCTs including adult participants, include interventions promoting the MedDiet, have a control group, and provide measurements of endothelial function. They analyzed 14 articles with 1,930 participants in a meta-analysis. They found endothelial function was benefitted by MedDiet. In adults, an improved endothelial function was afforded by MedDiet interventions, indicating that MedDiet-induced protective effects are obvious at the early stages of the atherosclerotic process with crucial implications for the early prevention of cardiovascular diseases. There was no modification of the effects of the MedDiet on endothelial function by health status, type of intervention, study duration, study design, BMI, or the age of participants.
