Mediterranean diet during pregnancy and childhood respiratory and atopic outcomes: Birth cohort study

European Respiratory Journal Mar 02, 2020

Bédard A, et al. - Researchers examined links between maternal Mediterranean diet (MD) score during pregnancy and current doctor-diagnosed asthma, wheeze, eczema, hay fever, atopy, and lung function in a total of 8,907 children at 7–9 years, in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. They found no connection of maternal MD score to asthma or other allergic outcomes. Following controlling for confounders, they found weak positive links between maternal MD score and childhood maximal mid-expiratory flow (FEF25–75). Overall, a possible link between adherence to MD during pregnancy and increased small airway function in childhood was suggested. However, experts gained no proof for a decreased risk of asthma or other allergic outcomes.
