Mediterranean diet and risk of rheumatoid arthritis: Findings from the French E3N‐EPIC cohort study
Arthritis & Rheumatology Sep 15, 2020
Nguyen Y, Salliot C, Gelot A, et al. - Researchers investigated the link between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, particularly in high‐risk persons. They used a French prospective cohort, the E3N Study (Etude Epidémiologique auprès des femmes de la Mutuelle générale de l’Education Nationale), which includes a total of 98,995 women since 1990. A 9‐unit dietary score was applied to evaluate adherence to the MD. There was no link of MD score with RA risk in the whole population, whereas MD score was found to be related to a reduced risk of RA in ever‐smokers. As per the findings, the high risk of RA among ever‐smoking women could be attenuated by adherence to the MD.
