Mediterranean diet and knee osteoarthritis outcomes: A longitudinal cohort study
Clinical Nutrition Dec 09, 2018
Veronese N, et al. - In this multivariable Poisson regression analysis, investigators studied the association of a higher Mediterranean diet radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA), radiographic symptomatic knee OA (SxOA), and pain worsening in North American people at high risk of, or having, knee OA. Study participants included 4,330 individuals (mean age: 61.1 years; 58.0% female) who were followed up over a mean period of 4 years. SxOA was absent in 2,994 people at baseline and, in these individuals, researchers noted that greater adherence to a Mediterranean diet was linked to a lower risk for SxOA during the follow-up by 9%. However, there was no evident meaningful relation between Mediterranean diet score and incident ROA.
