Mediterranean diet and antihypertensive drug use: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Hypertension May 28, 2021
Ribó-Coll M, Lassale C, Sacanella E, et al. - Among older people at high cardiovascular risk, it was inquired if intake of Mediterranean diet reduced the need of antihypertensive drugs as well as modulated their associated cardiovascular risk. Participants taking part in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea study were analyzed. Volunteers were randomly assigned to an intervention with a Mediterranean diet enriched with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts (compared with a low-fat control diet). Findings revealed that not only a reduction in the risk of initiating or escalating antihypertensive medication was conferred by consumption of a Mediterranean diet in an older population at high cardiovascular risk but also this dietary intervention led to cardiovascular risk attenuation in antihypertensive drug users.
