Medications used in US emergency departments for an ankle sprain: An analysis of the national hospital ambulatory medical care survey
The Journal of Emergency Medicine Oct 18, 2019
Kosik KB, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective review of the publicly available data collected through the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 2006–2015 in order to determine the type of medication(s) used for an ankle sprain and to review those across age and sex. From 2006 to 2015, 9,052,678 ankle sprain visits occurred in emergency departments. The 2 most common medications were NSAIDs (56.1%) and opioid analgesic combination (28.4%). In 2010, they identified an increase in the use of NSAIDs while a decrease occurred in opioid analgesic combinations. The most common medication was NSAIDs with each age cohort; however, no apparent trend was evident in medication for sex.
