Medications associated with fracture risk in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases May 19, 2019
Ozen G, et al. - Using a US-wide observational rheumatoid arthritis (RA) cohort, researchers assessed the risk of developing a fracture in relation to the use of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, statins, proton pump inhibitors, opioids, non-opioid analgesics and psychotropic medications. From a longitudinal observational registry (FORWARD), 11,412 patients with RA without prior fracture were followed-up for a median of 3.0 years. The follow-up revealed the occurrence of 914 fractures. An increased risk of any fracture in relation to the use of opioids, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and glucocorticoids, and decreased vertebral fractures in relation to statins and tumour necrosis factor-α inhibitors were reported in patients with RA.
