Medication regimen complexity and medication adherence in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease
Hemodialysis International Feb 23, 2019
Parker K, et al. - In this prospective study, researchers investigated factors related to medication complexity and medication adherence, as well as the link between medication complexity and medication adherence, in 157 elderly patients (aged 76 ± 7.2 years) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 5 (estimated glomerular filtration rate < 15 ml/min/1.73m2) recruited from three Norwegian hospitals. The participants were either on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. They evaluated the complexity of medication regimens and medication adherence by using the Medication Regimen Complexity Index (MRCI) and the eight-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8), respectively. The participants had an overall MRCI score of 22.8 ± 7.7. Of the total, 83% of the patients had moderate or high adherence (MMAS-8 score ≥ 6). The factors associated with more-complex medication regimens in this population were female sex, comorbidity and use of phosphate binders. Findings revealed no link between medication regimen complexity, phosphate binders or age and medication adherence.
