Medical financial hardship reported by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander cancer survivors compared with non‐Hispanic whites
Cancer Apr 07, 2020
Li C, et al. - To know more about medical financial hardship (MFH) among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) cancer survivors, researchers undertook this study with 150 adult NHPI cancer survivors selected from the 2014 NHPI National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Cancer survivors included those with a history of cancer (eliminating nonmelanoma/unknown type of skin cancer). Experts also included 2,098 non‐Hispanic white (NHW) cancer survivors from the 2014 NHIS, for comparison. Among elderly cancer survivors, any MFH, psychological MFH, and behavioral MFH was reported by more NHPIs vs NHWs. Among survivors aged < 65 years, less MFH was stated by NHPIs. Overall, MFH was reported by a significantly higher proportion of elderly NHPI cancer survivors, and this disparity persisted even following propensity score matching.
