Medical cannabis authorization in patients with cancer in the prelegalization era: A population-based study
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Feb 11, 2020
Karim S, et al. - Researchers sought to describe medical cannabis authorization in Alberta, Canada via assessing all patients aged 18 years and older diagnosed with invasive cancer from April 1, 2014, to December 31, 2016, using the Alberta Cancer Registry. The registry yielded data from 41,889 patients with cancer for this work. A small proportion of patients with cancer were authorized to use medical cannabis between 2014 and 2016 in Alberta. Authorization was associated with a cancer diagnosis and receiving treatment. Younger patients, those with advanced stage disease, and those undergoing systemic treatment were predictors of medical cannabis authorization. Among these patients, 1,070 (2.6%) had a medical cannabis authorization indicating that between 2014 and 2016, there were only a small proportion of patients with cancer who were authorized to use medical cannabis in Alberta. Authorization was noted to be correlated with a cancer diagnosis and receiving treatment. Predictors of medical cannabis authorization were younger patients, those with advanced-stage disease, and those undergoing systemic treatment.
