Medical and mental health predictors of pre-operative BMI in an adolescent sample seeking bariatric surgery
Journal of Adolescent Health Jan 20, 2019
Verzijl C, et al. - Using a retrospective chart review, researchers collected data in an adolescent sample seeking bariatric surgery to explore pre-operative BMI trajectories and associations with medical and mental health variables. Current or past history of pre-hypertension or hypertension, pre-diabetes or diabetes and abnormal lipids included medical information. Findings revealed that endorsement of binge eating, pre-diabetes/diabetes, and pre-hypertension/hypertension conditions were significantly associated with initial BMI. In adolescents seeking bariatric surgery, a number of medical and psychiatric symptoms, including diabetes and depression, were related to pre-operative BMI change. The interaction between time and pre-hypertension/hypertension was significant, so that BMI increased over time in patients with current or past hypertension, while those without hypertension exhibited a decrease in BMI during the pre-operative period.
