Mediating roles of preterm birth and restricted fetal growth in the relationship between maternal education and infant mortality: A Danish population-based cohort study
PLoS Medicine Jul 11, 2019
Yu Y, et al. - In this population-based cohort study involving all 1,994,618 live singletons born in Denmark, researchers examined whether and the extent to which preterm birth (PTB) and small for gestational age (SGA) at birth mediate the connection between maternal education and infant mortality. Findings suggested that PTB and SGA can play substantial roles in the link between low maternal education and infant mortality, particularly for neonatal mortality. It was noted that the mediating role of PTB seemed to be much stronger than that of SGA. In high-income countries, public health strategies aimed at reducing neonatal mortality may need to address socially related prenatal risk factors of PTB and impaired fetal growth. Maternal education's significant association with postneonatal mortality not accounted for by PTB or SGA may represent unaddressed educational disparities in infant care or other factors.
