Mediating effects of mental health problems in a clinical sample of adolescents with obesity
Obesity Facts Aug 27, 2021
Hampel P, Stachow R, Wienert J, et al. - Mental health issues could be one important mechanism by which the body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) affects global health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in obese adolescents. As a result, inpatient rehabilitation programmes for obese teenagers should place a greater emphasis on the development of psychological skills. Therefore, it is suggested that emotion regulation and social-emotional competencies be promoted.
The convenience sample included N = 313 obese adolescents (n female = 193, 61.7%) aged 12–17 (M = 14.19, SD = 1.52 years) recruited from an inpatient rehabilitation programme.
Emotional, peer-related, and behavioural issues mediated the negative effects of BMI-SDS on global HRQoL, with high, moderate, and small effect sizes, respectively.
