Measuring the distress related to delirium in older surgical patients and their relatives
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Apr 14, 2019
Partridge JSL, et al. - In this prospective study, 102 patients and 49 relatives were enrolled to assess the psychological impact of delirium in patients and relatives. Patients who recalled delirium had median scores of 8/10 on the distress thermometer, and comparable distress was also reported in relatives (median distress thermometer score 8/10). The severity of and phenotypic features of delirium (delusions, labile affect, agitation) were identified to be correlated with each other. In patients and relatives distress endured to 12 months. These findings emphasize the need for interventions to lower distress from postoperative delirium, as well as methods of reducing incidence of delirium.
