Measures of poor sleep quality are associated with higher energy intake and poor diet quality in a diverse sample of women from the Go Red for Women Strategically Focused Research Network

Zuraikat FM, et al. - Given poor sleep raises cardiovascular disease risk, and diet possibly adds to this link, but limited epidemiological data exist on the link between measures of sleep quality and habitual dietary patterns, so, researchers assessed these links in a diverse sample of women, utilizing baseline data for 495 participants in the AHA Go Red for Women prospective cohort study (age: 20–76 years; 61% racial/ethnic minority). The link of higher Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores (indicative of poorer sleep quality) with lower unsaturated fat consumption and higher food weight and added sugars consumed, was revealed. Findings revealed a link of poor sleep quality with greater food consumption and lower-quality diet, which can raise cardiovascular disease risk.
