Measures of left ventricular diastolic function and cardiorespiratory fitness according to glucose metabolism status: The Maastricht Study

Journal of the American Heart Association Jun 18, 2021

Veugen MGJ, Linssen PBC, Henry RMA, et al. - Researchers analyzed a well‐characterized population‐based cohort stratified based on glucose metabolism status, to cross-sectionally assess links between structural and functional measures of left ventricular diastolic function and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in this population. They analyzed 672 participants from The Maastricht Study (mean±SD age, 61±9 years; 17.4% prediabetes and 25.4% type 2 diabetes mellitus). Findings of this population‐based analysis demonstrated independent differential associations of structural and functional measures of left ventricular diastolic function with CRF over the strata of glucose metabolism status. This implies that worsening left ventricular diastolic function, albeit of small impact, may contribute to the pathophysiological process of impaired CRF in the general population. In addition, the observed differential impacts in these structural measures may result from cardiac structural adaptation to successfully elevate CRF in normal glucose metabolism, which is not present in (pre)diabetes.
