Mean platelet volume does not predict restenosis after carotid artery stenting in whites
Stroke Dec 26, 2019
Haidegger M, Kneihsl M, Niederkorn K, et al. - In order to know the role of mean platelet volume (MPV) on the development of in-stent restenosis (ISR) post-carotid artery stenting (CAS) in whites, researchers undertook this study including retrospectively selected consecutive patients who had CAS for atherosclerotic disease from 2005 to 2017. The participants were followed clinically and by means of duplex sonography at 1, 3, and 6 months and annually following CAS. There were overall 392 patients with CAS, with a mean age of 68.5 ± 9.5 years, 26.8% were women, 42.3% with symptomatic stenosis. Among these, ISR developed in 54, as revealed following a mean follow-up time of 32 months. Findings revealed that no risk for ISR after CAS was conferred by MPV in whites. To prevent this complication, an important target is smoking cessation.
