Mean platelet volume as a predictor of pulmonary hypertension in patients with stable COPD
International Journal of COPD May 31, 2019
Mohamed MF, et al. - In this cross-sectional analysis of stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients (n=228), researchers evaluated whether mean platelet volume (MPV) could serve as a predictor of pulmonary hypertension (PH) secondary to COPD as well as its severity. Participants were asked to undergo CBC, echocardiography, and pulmonary function tests. Increasing one unit of MPV was accompanied with up to 7-times increase in likelihood probability of PH. Sensitivity and specificity of 96% and 76%, respectively, was yielded at a cut-off value of MPV >7.25 for the prediction of PH. COPD patients with PH exhibited a higher MPV. Findings also revealed a positive correlation of MPV with PH severity.
