Mature and immature pediatric head and neck teratomas: A 15-year review at a large tertiary center
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Dec 14, 2017
Dharmarajan H, et al. - Herein, the authors sought to appraise the management and outcomes of pediatric head and neck teratomas. Additionally, they aspired to distinguish differences between mature and immature tumors in terms of age at presentation and surgery, tumor size and location, alpha fetoprotein (AFP) levels, airway management, and recurrence. Higher AFP levels, tumor dimensions, the frequency of anterior neck localization, and requirement of Ex Utero Intrapartum Treatment (EXIT) were reported in immature teratomas than mature teratomas. As a result of the absence of any notable variation between the recurrence rates of immature and mature teratomas, the maintenance of equal follow-up vigilance was recommended, irrespective of the tumor maturity.
