Maternal thyroid hormone insufficiency during pregnancy and risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Endocrinology | Apr 05, 2018
Thompson W, et al. - The correlation between maternal thyroid hormone insufficiency during pregnancy, and neurodevelopmental disorders in children was examined. Additionally, it was determined if levothyroxine treatment for maternal thyroid hormone insufficiency improved the child neurodevelopment outcomes. A possible connection was revealed between maternal hypothyroxinaemia and subclinical hypothyroidism with intellectual disability in offspring. No evidence was obtained regarding the reduction of intellectual disability in offspring due to levothyroxine treatment, when initiated 8- to 20-week gestation (mostly between 12 and 17 weeks), for mild maternal thyroid hormone insufficiency during pregnancy.
