Maternal thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy and the risk of adverse outcomes in the offspring: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Aug 22, 2020
Ge GM, Leung MTY, Man KKC, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library to explore the connection between maternal thyroid dysfunction and the risk of adverse outcomes in offspring. Twenty-nine eligible articles were identified. An association was found between maternal hyperthyroidism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy in offspring. In addition, maternal hypothyroidism was associated with increased risk of ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and epilepsy in offspring. Routine assessment and timely thyroid function care for pregnant women should be considered.
