Maternal temperature in emergency caesarean section (MATES): An observational multicentre study
International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia Feb 02, 2021
Thorburn PT, Monteiro R, Chakladar A, et al. - Via performing a multi-centre observational cohort study, researchers sought to determine the prevalence of hypothermia and hyperthermia during emergency caesarean section. Across 14 sites in the UK, they recruited 265 participants over a 12-month period. Findings here suggest that in mothers who undergo emergency caesarean section, both hypothermia and hyperthermia are prevalent findings. The prevalence of hypothermia (< 36.0°C) and hyperthermia (> 37.5°C) was 10.7% and 14.7%, respectively, on admission to recovery. Based on these findings, they suggest essentiality of accurate temperature measurement to ensure that an appropriate intra-operative temperature management strategy is employed.
