Maternal obstetric and socio-demographic determinants of low birth weight: A retrospective cross-sectional study in Ghana
Reproductive Health Jun 04, 2019
Mohammed S, et al. - Researchers sought for maternal socio-demographic and obstetric risk factors that could be associated with the birth weight of newborns in the Sunyani Municipality of Ghana. In this retrospective cross-sectional study of data from 931 birth records, the mean age of the participants and the mean gestational age at birth were 27.21(SD = 5.50) years and 37.95(SD = 1.85) weeks respectively. Observations suggest that low birth weight could be independently predicted by maternal educational level, residence, hemoglobin level, parity, number of ANC visits, and gestational age. To the growing literature on the influence of maternal socio-demographic and obstetric factors on LBW in resource-constrained settings, the current findings contribute substantially and present empirical data for clinical and public health interventions aimed at reducing low birth weight and its associated complications.
