Maternal hypertensive disorders in SLE pregnancy and future cardiovascular outcomes
Arthritis Care & Research Feb 11, 2020
Simard JF, Rossides M, Arkema EV, et al. - Experts performed a population-based cohort study to evaluate whether hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are correlated with a higher risk of cardiovascular outcomes separately in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and non-SLE to examine the role of SLE. First singleton births in the Medical Birth Register (1987-2012) were distinguished among mothers with SLE and a large general population comparison group. Using ICD codes, discharge diagnoses for HDP, cardiovascular results, and hypertension in the Patient Register were recognized. HDP was found to be more common in SLE pregnancies (20% vs 7%). HDP was correlated with a two-fold higher rate of cardiovascular results and a three-fold higher rate of incident hypertension in SLE. Moreover, HDP was correlated with higher hypertension incidence later in life in women without SLE. The data suggested that HDP were correlated with a three-fold higher rate of hypertension in women with and without SLE. It was noted that women with HDP developed cardiovascular outcomes twice as often as women without HDP in SLE.
