Maternal history of asthma modifies the risk of childhood persistent asthma associated with maternal age at birth: Results from a large prospective cohort in Canada
Journal of Asthma Oct 20, 2019
Wadden D, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers examined the link between maternal age at birth and persistent asthma in children at ten years of age. Participants were all children aged 0-2 years who participated in the first cycle of the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youths. Until eight to ten years of age, these children were followed up every two years in Cycle 5. A significant link of older maternal age at birth with an increased risk of childhood persistent asthma was revealed in mothers with a history of asthma, on multivariate logistic regression. They found no link in mothers without a history of asthma. These findings are indicative of an influence of maternal history of asthma on the link between maternal age at birth and childhood persistent asthma in children by age ten.
