Maternal HBV viremia and association with adverse infant outcomes in women living with HIV and HBV
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Jan 11, 2021
Bhattacharya D, Guo R, Tseng CH, et al. - Researchers sought to report on perinatal outcomes in HIV-hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfection. In HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 046, a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of perinatal transmission, evaluation of 6 months of infant nevirapine vs placebo was performed among breast-fed infants. Enrollment was performed of women living with HIV and their infants in sub-Saharan Africa; of these, 78% received antiretroviral therapy (ART). Among 2,025 women, HBV was reported in 88 (4.3%) women. In women with HIV-HBV coinfection, risk of LBW and potentially HIV perinatal transmission was higher in correlation with high HBV viral loads. There may be beneficial effects of reduction of antepartum HBV viremia beyond the prevention of HBV perinatal transmission.
