Maternal exposure to sulfonamides and adverse pregnancy outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Dec 08, 2020
Li P, Qin X, Tao F, et al. - Given that sulfonamides are commonly used in the treatment of infectious diseases during pregnancy, however, the safety of maternal exposure to sulfonamides is uncertain, researchers sought to systematically review the available studies and investigate the impact of maternal sulfonamides use on adverse pregnancy outcomes. PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, CNKI and Wanfang Database (in Chinese) were searched for this analysis. A total of 10 studies and 1,096,350 candidates were included in the systematic review. Findings suggested that congenital malformations of the offspring may be associated with maternal exposure to sulfonamides. It is recommended that the prescription of sulfonamides is carefully censored for pregnant women.
