Maternal diabetes mellitus as a risk factor for high blood pressure in late childhood: A prospective birth cohort study
Hypertension Dec 07, 2018
Miranda JO, et al. – In this prospective birth cohort study involving 8,301 mother-offspring pairs enrolled in Generation XXI (including 586 children of diabetic mothers), researchers examined the link between maternal diabetes mellitus and offspring blood pressure (BP) levels ≤ 10 years of age. Linear regression was used to model the links between maternal diabetes mellitus and BP at 4, 7, and 10 years of age. The evaluation of differences in BP variation over time was performed by building a mixed-effects model. Impacts of potential mediators were estimated by using path analysis. The investigators noted an association of maternal diabetes mellitus with high BP late in childhood, demonstrating a significant role of child’s body mass in the pathway of this association.
