Maternal cognitive function during pregnancy in relation to hypo- and hyperthyroxinemia

Clinical Endocrinology Nov 15, 2019

Pop VJ, Ormindean V, Mocan A, et al. - Adjusted for major confounders, researchers evaluated a possible connection between maternal cognitive dysfunction during pregnancy and hypothyroxinemia. Participants in the study were 2,082 healthy pregnant women. In total, 54 women exhibited hypothyroxinemia and 1,476 women had euthyroxinemia. The results obtained from this prospective follow-up study from 12 to 32 weeks of pregnancy indicate that in addition to depression and sleeping problems, women with low thyroid hormone levels during early gestation are at risk of poor cognitive function during gestation, possibly related to the existence of elevated TPO-Ab titres.
