Maternal childbirth experience and time of delivery: A retrospective 7-year cohort study of 105,847 parturients in Finland
BMJ Open Jun 20, 2021
Joensuu J, Saarijärvi H, Rouhe H, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study with the aim to determine the impact of the time of delivery on childbirth experience. Primiparas and multiparas exhibited a major difference in average childbirth experience measured by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Findings suggest that the time of delivery influences the maternal childbirth experience. Impaired childbirth experience was recorded in both primiparas and multiparas in correlation with giving birth during the evening, compared with delivery at other times. Further study is required concerning the impact of labour induction on childbirth experience. Changes in annual VAS might occur in correlation with the reorganisation of delivery services and the reduction of birth preparations. Researchers suggest VAS to be a simple tool for measuring the complex entity of childbirth experience, and the findings suggest its ability to capture temporal variation.
