Maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnancies in systemic lupus erythematosus: A nationwide population-based study
Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism Feb 12, 2020
Chen YJ, Chang JC, Lai EL, et al. - The present study was undertaken to investigate the risk of pregnancy complications in Asian patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Researchers performed a nationwide case-control study, using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database between January 2005 to December 2014. A total of 2,059 SLE offspring and 8,236 age-matched, maternal healthy controls were recruited in this study. The study compared obstetric complications and perinatal outcomes in SLE patients with those without SLE. Compared with healthy controls, increased obstetric and perinatal complications were found in the SLE population. The data indicated that Asian SLE individuals showed elevated risks of maternal complications and adverse birth outcomes. In high-risk SLE individuals, frequent antenatal visits before 20 gestational weeks are recommended.
