Journal of Adolescent Health Aug 14, 2020
Yang B, Ostbye T, Huang X, et al. - Researchers performed a-5-year prospective cohort study to analyze the correlation of maternal age at menarche (AAM) with pubertal timing among girls and boys in Chongqing, China. By inspection and palpation from April 2014 to June 2019, pubertal development of 1,237 children (542 girls and 695 boys) have been examined half-yearly. In total, 1,198 children (528 girls and 670 boys) were involved in the study. Earlier maternal AAM in both girls and boys in Chongqing was linked to earlier pubertal timing, particularly the age of girls at menarche and the first ejaculation of boys. The most consistent factor for pubertal timing was Children's BMIz. Children's BMIz and socioeconomic factors had greater impact than maternal AAM on most pubertal milestones. In addition, parental education and relationship, birth weight, parity, and family type were related to pubertal timing.
