Maternal age and risk of low birth weight and premature birth in children conceived through medically assisted reproduction. Evidence from Finnish population registers

Human Reproduction Jan 26, 2020

Barbuscia A, Martikainen P, Myrskylä M, et al. - Given an increasing use of medically assisted reproduction (MAR) treatments over the last few decades and its especially diffusion among women who conceive at older ages, researchers here investigated the influence of age of mothers who conceive through MAR on the risk of low birth weight (< 2500 g at birth) and premature birth. From the Finnish population register and other administrative registers, they assessed data of 20% random sample of households with at least one child aged 0–14 at the end of 2000 that comprised the base dataset. As the information on whether a child was conceived through MAR or naturally was available only from 1995 onwards, they included children who were born in 1995–2000. The analysis suggested no increase in the risk of poorer birth outcomes with maternal age at birth among MAR mothers except at very advanced maternal ages (40+).
