Matched cohort analysis of total hip arthroplasty in patients with and without Parkinson’s disease: Complications, mortality, length of stay, and hospital charges
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 22, 2019
Kleiner JE, et al. - Researchers assessed 794,689 candidates to examine the cost, complication, mortality, and length of stay after hip arthroplasty (THA) among Parkinson’s disease (PD) cases using a national database. They noted 4,003 THA patients affected by comorbid Parkinson's disease. They observed that arthroplasty cases with PD were significantly older, more often male, and had higher Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). Association of PD with increased length of stay (3.1 vs 2.7 days), total hospital charges ($49,061 vs $45,571), and in-hospital complication rate (14.6% vs 11.7%) was also reported. They suggested focusing on the elevation in per-episode cost ($3,490) when considering PD cases for surgery within the evolving "bundled payment" model of care.
