Matched cohort analysis of total hip arthroplasty in patients with and without Parkinson’s disease: Complications, mortality, length of stay, and hospital charges
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 15, 2019
Kleiner JE, et al. - Using a national database, authors investigated if, after total hip arthroplasty (THA), Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients had increased cost, complication, mortality, and length of stay. They recorded 4,003 patients who had THA with comorbid Parkinson's disease. They observed arthroplasty patients with PD were significantly older, more frequently male, and had greater Charlson Comorbidity Index (before matching). Increased length of stay (3.1 vs 2.7 days), total hospital charges ($49,061 vs $45,571), and in-hospital complication rate (14.6% vs 11.7%) were all associated with PD. Although, no variance was seen for in-hospital mortality rate in PD patients.
