Mastectomy is no longer an indication for postoperative opioid prescription at discharge
American Journal of Surgery Jul 25, 2019
Rojas KE, et al. - Researchers examined if a reduction in the quantity of opioids prescribed at discharge could be achieved in patients undergoing mastectomy via the implementation of a 10-step protocol employing multimodal analgesia. Comparison of patients who received the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol to a control group was performed. Further, comparison of inpatient and discharge prescription of opioids was done using oral morphine equivalents, along with the comparison of postoperative pain scores. From 2017 to 2018, fifty-seven patients were identified who fulfilled the inclusion criteria; of these, 20 patients received ERAS and 37 received usual care. As per observations, postoperative opioids were less required and postoperative pain scores were significantly lower among patients who received the ERAS protocol.
