Marginal ulcer continues to be a major source of morbidity over time following gastric bypass
Surgical Endoscopy Sep 09, 2019
Pyke O, Yang J, Cohnet T, et al. - Querying a New York state longitudinal administrative database, researchers investigated patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) for the progression of marginal ulcerations (MU). In addition, they sought for risk factors for the need for surgical intervention in patients with MU following RYGB. Among 35,075 patients who underwent RYGB (Mean age: 42.47 ± 10.90 years; female: 81.08%); 2,201 (6.28%) patients suffered MU, of which 204 (9.27% of MU; 0.58% of RYGB overall) required surgery. Risk factors for surgical intervention comprised young age, white race, and marked weight loss. Early intensive medical therapy at the time of MU diagnosis may benefit such patients.
