Mapping the neuroanatomical impact of very preterm birth across childhood
Human Brain Mapping Nov 17, 2019
Vandewouw MM, Young JM, Mossad SI, et al. - Structural MRI was screened on 120 very preterm (VPT) and 146 full-term (FT) children who returned up to three times, leading to 176 VPT and 173 FT novel data points, in order to investigate subcortical volumes, cortical thickness, and surface area in a large cohort of VPT and FT children aged 4–12 years. Few distinctions between the two groups in subcortical volumes were discovered. Progressed cortical thickness in frontal, occipital and fusiform gyri and inferior pre–post–central areas was exhibited by the VPT children, while thinning transpired in the midcingulate. In comparison with the FT children, more fast reductions with age in the VPT was demonstrated by cortical thickness in occipital regions. VPT children also exhibited both regional progresses, especially in the temporal lobe, and reductions in surface area. Thus, in those born VPT, results suggest a postponed maturational trajectory.
