Mapping hot spots of breast cancer mortality in the United States: Place matters for Blacks and Hispanics
Cancer Causes and Control Jun 22, 2018
Moore JX, et al. - Researchers analyzed data on breast cancer deaths among women in 3108 contiguous United States (US) counties from years 2000 through 2015, to determine the geographic and racial/ethnic variation in breast cancer mortality and to assess if county-level characteristics can explain observed geographic differences. Novel geospatial methods were applied and hot spot counties based on breast cancer mortality rates were identified. They used Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Spearman correlation to determine the differences in county-level characteristics between hot spot and other counties. All analysis were stratified by race/ethnicity. They found breast cancer mortality varied by geography and race/ethnicity; NH-Black and Hispanic breast cancer deaths were more concentrated in southern, lower SES counties.
