Obesity Surgery May 10, 2019

Hughes D, et al. - Researchers examined different treatment strategies for staple line leak following sleeve gastrectomy in terms of their efficacy and success rates. Searching four online electronic databases, they included a total of 26 articles in this systematic review. Achievement of successful initial management was noted in 62% of patients who underwent endoscopic management, 76% of those who underwent surgery and 82% of patients treated conservatively. To successfully manage a staple line leak following sleeve gastrectomy, they emphasize prompt identification and adequate source control. The clinical status of the patient was noted influencing the treatment options. For improved outcomes, they recognize the necessity for a stepwise treatment escalation approach.
