Management of sharp-pointed esophageal foreign-body impaction with rigid endoscopy: A retrospective study of 130 adult patients
ENT Journal Apr 17, 2020
Feng S, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to introduce a management algorithm for adult patients with sharp-pointed esophageal foreign-body impaction (EFBI) with rigid endoscopy (RE) indications and to perform a retrospective analysis of their data. Between January 2017 and May 2019, all adult patients who received RE at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology in Beijing Shijitan Hospital were recruited. In total, 130 individuals were identified, 56.9% were female with median age 60 years. Odynophagia and sore throat were the most common symptoms. Long-time interval from ingestion to presentation can result in high risk of significant complications. For all patients suspected of having an EFBI, CT should be a priority imaging method, and multidisciplinary collaboration is suggested. In addition, mass education about eating habits is required.
