Management of hepatitis C infection in children in the era of direct-acting antiviral agents
Journal of Viral Hepatitis Jun 20, 2019
Karnsakul W, et al. - In this manuscript, the epidemiology of HCV in children, historic treatment, current published data on direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) in children will be reviewed. During early childhood but not thereafter, spontaneous viral clearance occurs commonly. Although HCV cases, in the majority, are asymptomatic during childhood and young adulthood, without an effective treatment, HCV acquired via vertical transmission can lead to chronic liver disease and other complications including end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma in adulthood. Very effective interferon-free therapy with DAAs for HCV-infected children has emerged as a result of efforts from worldwide health organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, and clinical and research institutions.
