Management of chronic pain through pain management programmes
British Medical Bulletin Sep 23, 2017
Wilson IR, et al. - Researchers conducted a search using Medline and the Cochrane Library to identify published literature about pain management programmes (PMPs) or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to treat chronic pain. Findings suggested significant benefit of PMPs on functioning for some patients but there appeared relatively little impact on the pain. It was realized that not all patients, nor pain types, benefit. There appeared much heterogeneity between approaches and outcomes measured, and there was inconsistent reporting of the extent and duration of benefit. In this work, existing data provided limited information to judge whether PMPs represent good value for each of the stakeholders.
