Management of childhood-onset craniopharyngioma in Italy: A multicenter seven year follow-up study of 145 patients
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Nov 03, 2021
Zucchini S, Di Iorgi N, Pozzobon G, et al. - A late diagnosis of craniopharyngioma (CP) is also common in Italy. Transcranic (TC) surgical approach is more frequently employed than transphenoidal (TS) surgical approach to treat CP. Postoperative complications are not rare.
A retrospective multicenter analysis of 145 patients (aged 0-18 years) managed surgically for CP between 2000-2018, followed-up in 17 Italian centers.
Age at diagnosis was 8.4±4.1 years, and 67.5% of cases were managed using TC surgical approach and 31.% with TS surgical approach.
53% of cases developed post-surgery complications, most frequent were water-electrolyte disturbances.
39% of cases were treated with radiotherapy.
Almost in all cases, development of hypopituitarism was seen.
GH therapy was initiated during observation in 112 patients at a mean age of 10.6 years and a recurrence or regrowth of the residual lesion was evident in 54 patients.
BMI demonstrated a tendency to increase overtime.
