Malignant fibrous histiocytoma: Database review suggests a favorable prognosis in the head and neck
The Laryngoscope Oct 12, 2017
Borucki RB, et al. - This research initiated a comparative analysis of the characteristics of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) based on location, in order to gain information regarding the prognosis in the head and neck region. It utilized the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for this study. This tumor exhibited a smaller size and lower grade, possibly owing to the earlier presentation in this region. Hence, head and neck malignant fibrous histiocytoma reflected as a more favorable survival prognosis than with trunk and extremity disease.
Methods
- The study design constituted the retrospective analysis of SEER database.
- 395 patients with MFH of the head and neck were contrasted against 3,968 patients with MFH of the trunk and extremities.
- Disease-specific survival compared these two cohorts, alongside the univariate and multivariate analysis in order to estimate the hazard ratios.
Results
- A substantially higher disease-specific survival was reported in patients with head and neck MFH, compared with trunk and extremity disease.
- Nonetheless, the head and neck tumors were often noted as being of a smaller size (P < .0001) and lower grade (P < .0001).
- A worse prognosis (P < .0001) was conferred by larger tumors and grade III and IV tumors.
