Major depression and comorbid diabetes - Findings from the European Group for the Study of Resistant Depression
Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry Jun 26, 2019
Fugger G, et al. - Researchers conducted this multicenter study of the European Group for the Study of Resistant Depression (GSRD) in order to determine the relationship between major depressive disorder (MDD) and comorbid diabetes. They cross-sectionally retrieved demographic and clinical information from 1,410 patients with a primary MDD diagnosis according to DSM-IV guidelines. Depressed patients showed a higher prevalence of diabetes than the general population. Depressed patients with diabetes showed markedly elevated suicide risk. Thus, these patients should be thoroughly assessed for suicide risk via appropriate screening, according to the investigators. Overall, they did not observe any impact of diabetes in depressed patients on illness severity/treatment response.
